The Science, Technology & Mobility department analyzes, explains, and comments on the major developments of our time in these three areas. To strengthen our team in Zürich, we are looking for a profiled journalist with a sound background in physics as of 1 October 2026 or by arrangement.
Your Tasks
You observe and analyze international fundamental and applied research in physics. You detect relevant debates early and classify them.
You write contributions in all journalistic styles – such as commentaries, analyses, explanatory pieces, reports, or portraits.
You also work together with data, Osint, and visual journalists.
You prepare your topics in a target-group-oriented manner for various channels. In addition to classic print reporting, you primarily work with digital formats, newsletters, and you also appear in the NZZ science editorial team's podcast ("NZZ Quantensprung") and other NZZ podcasts (e.g., "NZZ Akzent") or in video formats.

Particle physics, astronomy and cosmology: What holds the world together at its innermost core and how does that influence our universe?
New materials: Which applications do unconventional superconductors, topological insulators, or exotic states of matter promise?
Quantum physics: What can quantum computers, quantum sensors, and the quantum internet do?
Spaceflight: Where is the commercialization of space leading?
Your Profile
Completed studies in physics as well as a deep understanding of modern physical theories and experiments.
The ability to translate abstract, mathematically dense matter vividly for a broad audience – without loss of scientific correctness.
Demonstrable experience in science journalism. You master the journalistic craft.
